Knorr Food Comapny Will Rename Its German ‘Gypsy Sauce’ After Complaints

Wafubeh! (Greetings in Afro-Romani – Ninzuwu). Great news! Earlier this week it was reported by the Associated Press that the German food company Knorr has announced earlier this week that it will change the name of its “Zigeunersauce,” or “gypsy sauce” to “Paprika Sauce Hungarian Style,” the German weekly Bild am Sonntag reported Sunday.

“Zigeuner”(gypsy) is a derogative German expression for all our people of Romani descent and especially affected are the Roma and Sinti minority groups who have lived throughout Europe for centuries and have faced an appalling amount of persecution.

Knorr food company has been in business since 1838. Some of the recent changes to the company’s policies were affected by racial tensions in America and demands from Roma and Sinti organizations in Germany. The head of the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma welcomed Knorr’s decision to no longer use the term.
